[tropical fish club] Scavender tank question

I amin the process of setting up a 120 g freshwater tank with.a wet dry filtrr system. I want to add a space for plants and and some scavengers. I seem to remember that I should have the lights on when the display tank lightd sre out.

2nf question concerning sand as a substrate. Are there specisl considerations needed if sand is used.

Thanks in advance
John
