It's the KH (carbonate hardness) that needs to be kept on top of, as any
acid additions will induce a lowering effect directly against this buffering
capacity. The GH remains fairly constant, lowered only by that portion of
the KH of this larger value which has been influenced by a pH lowering agent.
The General Hardness will always tend to remain more constant unless
diluted by water having a lower GH or by allowing the present water column to
partially evaporate, effectively concentrating the GH.
