Gator spoke with Helen, our Las Vegas Canoe Club member from Desert River Outfitters, and since all the Government issued permits for an Oct. 31st Hoover Dam launch have been taken, we have worked out a great alternative idea for a November Colorado River Trip.
This will be a relatively easy 14 mile paddle as it is all downriver, boat traffic is minimal, there are no rapids, and we have two full days to get there.
The paddle will start at the Hacienda Hotel, just outside of Boulder City at 8 AM on Saturday Nov. 6th. Our outfitter will shuttle us across the dam and south to Willow Beach, AZ via van and canoe trailer (holding up to 10 canoes).
We will launch below Willow Beach Marina around 9:30 AM and float south DOWNRIVER to paddle, fish, hike, and soak up the beautiful scenery on Saturday. We'll probably paddle downriver on Saturday till about 1 PM (3 to 4 1/2 hours) finding a suitable camp on some natural sandy beach along the Colorado River where, after setting up our camp, we can nap, hike, cook, fish, swim, drink, and tell jokes or lies around a common campfire.
Dinner specifics will be decided and posted at a later date.
Foodstuffs, condiments, and supplies will mostly be rationed out to reduce any unnecessary duplication and weight. Canoeists will be responsible for their own snacks and drinks, as well as any meals that were not pre-planned by group.
Firewood will be provided by Jamie and split between various canoes for easier transport.
After coffee and some breakfast, we will break camp and canoe/kayak to Nelson's Landing where we will be picked up Sunday late afternoon.
We know that so far we have enrolled:
1. Jamie
2. Gator
3. Southwest Rick
4. Starfish (?)
5. Mary D
6. Mary's guest from San Fran
7. Salamander (?)
8. Moose (?)
We'd like to know who else is interested. We'll have to hold another "Java Night" in October to make final trip plans and plan our menu.
All paddling gear (canoe, paddle,PFD,seat, chair back) will be provided. The cost to Helen for the canoes, gear, and a shuttle both ways for our club members will be only $50.00 per person. Since we are departing from Willow Beach there is no $13.00 Dam Launch Permit Fee this time.
If you wish to fish for Striped Bass along the way with us, get to Wal Mart, Bass Pro Shops, or any other sporting goods retailer for a Nevada Fishing License. It's $29.00 for the year plus a $3.00 Arizona Colorado River Stamp. It will be valid till February 28th of next year(2011). Be sure to bring a stiff rod that will handle a good sized Striper as they can get up to 65 pounds on the river. Jamie will be happy to help with gear, bait, and tackle selection, as well as loaner rods if needed.
Please call Gator (Las Vegas Canoe Club) at 278-4644 or Jamie (Nevada Anglers) at 259-1050 to signup today!
