It was yellow jackets. To me one bee is just as bad as another... but they were for sure yellow jackets. Sorry for the confusion.

But one thing confuses me. You've referred to the insects as hornets,
yellow jackets, and bees. Which was it?
For those whose zoology is limited to fish (grin), hornets are the
nastiest, yellow jacket ferocity varies from nasty to laid back, and
bees (other than the "killer" kind) are darn near harmless most of the
time. I've helped extract honey from hives and had bees crawling on me,
including on my glasses - never got stung.
