Re: [tropical fish club] Automatic Fish Feeders

Kathi,
I will ask my hubby if there is a less expensive auto feeder that he could suggest.  He knows which ones are better than the others more than I do.

In regards to the dissolving feeders... PLEASE don't use those things!  The only thing they serve to do is pollute the water.  I have helped so many people over the years who have tried to use those and come home to a tank full of sick or dead fish.  Those are one product I would love to see taken off the retail market.

My other suggestion would be to see if you can find someone to come in every other day to feed the fish for you.  Its easy if you prepare the food into individual baggies or containers ahead of time.  I have done this in the past and it works very well for everyone.  I get to regulate how much they get each feeding according to how much I put into each baggie, and the date is marked on each so they know which baggie to give on which day.  All they have to do is dump the right baggie into the right tank by following the directions on each baggie.  I have used small plastic food containers at times for this, also have used salt/pepper shakers (new and never used for people food), all of which work very well.  I have also saved old fish food containers for this sort of thing... whatever works for you as long as its clean and not contaminated with human products.

How long are you intending to be gone?

If I can think of anymore suggestions i will let you know, and I will talk to hubby tonight about the auto feeders and see if he can suggest one a little less expensive.  One thing its important to remember is that in the fish world, you tend to get what you pay for.

Thanks for your reply, Dawn. Your hubby's favorite is more than I am willing to spend right now and I just read some reviews about the Fish Mate (the feeder that I had asked about) on Amazon that weren't too good. So, can anyone recommend those dissolving fish feeders? I can have someone come in every 3 or 4 days to drop one in. Are they any good?

[MANCiNGiKANMaS] sharks fins

Sharks are displayed at Lampulo fish market at Indonesia's Aceh province June 5, 2008. A shark can be sold between 250,000 - 4,000,000 rupiah ($27-$424) each, a fisherman said. Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy in this region, while the meat of the fish often seen as a ferocious sea predator is largely shunned because of its strong taste. Recently Bali-based chef Budi Susilo says he's come up with a way to make shark more palatable, and less vulnerable to being discarded in the ocean after its lucrative fin has been carved out.

Re: [tropical fish club] Automatic Feeders

Hi Kathi!
I personally don't like the auto fish feeders, however... my husband is quite fond of them.  There is one in particular that he has used for yrs that he just loves, so I asked him what it was.  I'm including a link to the one he has, he used it on his reef tank for yrs, but says he doesn't suggest it for saltwater use to others, as it doesn't handle the salt buildup as well as some others do.  He has had that auto feeder for over 10 yrs now, although I no longer permit its use on my tanks, lol.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10849/product.web

I don't know how much this helps, if any... but thought I would pass the info along just in case.  Its a little more expensive than the one you mention in your post, but this is one I know can be vouched for when it comes to use, functions, durability, reliability etc.  and I have to admit, even I was impressed  by how well this one worked and how long it has lasted.

The other thing hubby asked me to include was his suggestion to seek out a unit that plugs into the wall if possible (which this one does) rather than relying on batteries.  It can be very hard to gauge how long batteries will last, and dead batteries while you're away could mean the difference in starvation of your fish.  If your planned time away is lengthy battery powered feeders are not going to be as reliable unless you have plenty of time to test them first.  There are a few out there that "slow down" as the batteries weaken, and I have seen a lot of tank issues over the yrs from people who have used them.  (they're not ALL bad, but sorting through and figuring out which ones are better can be time consuming and difficult)

Best of luck to you!

Dawn

Hi Everybody! I'm looking for an automatic feeder for over the holidays and found one with 14 individual compartments (sounds like a great idea) made by Fish Mate, selling for $29.99. Does anyone have experience with this brand? Is there another brand that you really like? I think that the individual compartments will reduce the likelihood of overfeeding my 7 small glofish, 2 red cherry shrimp and 3 snails (30 gallon tank).

Thanks in advance!

Kathi

[fishingtheusaandcanada] Giant Goldfish – real or fake ?

During the 10-minute struggle to reel the giant goldfish in, Raphael Biagini said, "To begin with, we couldn't tell what was at the end of the line, but we knew it was big." After snapping the above shot, Biagnini released the fish back into the water. Experts say orange koi grow to fit their habitat so catching a fish of this size is not impossible, just rare. In fact, koi carp can even grow bigger than the one Biagini caught.

Putting all the science aside, this picture looks fake. Isn't this fish just too orange? Doesn't it seem a little big to be only 30 pounds? And why isn't it struggling? Biagini looks too relaxed to be holding a fish of that size and weight…

[FantasticFishing] Giant Goldfish – real or fake ?

A giant goldfish was apparently caught at a lake in France but now some are calling the story a fake, though marine experts say that a fish that size and color is very possible. Photoshop magic but it is real, Fisherman Raphael Biagini caught a huge Goldfish in France where the fish are very popular. The fish is orange in color and looks like a giant goldfish which weighs 30 pounds. Photo is several months old but it is getting popular now through an article from U.K's Daily Mail.

Re: [briansfreshwaterfishing] Question

Hey liltuffguy,
Welcome to Briansfreshwaterfishing, glad to have you aboard.
In order for any of us to really help you we'd need to know where Hoffman Estates or Palantine are located.   What state for starters, including the county or a nearby city would sure help.  This group has an international membership; we can cover a lot of ground if you can give us a good start up point.
Thanks, and
