Sorry about your dog, that is so sad. Yes, these things were aggressive like that... and with that many of them it was just scary. Watching them attack the plastic we put up over the doorway was like watching a horror movie, it made my skin crawl.
All I can say is that we all got very lucky that nobody, including our dog was stung. Not much scares me, but the other day, standing in my kitchen, I was truly scared.
We put the traps out once at my in law's house, and we caught a lot of them... but it backfired on us because the weather was very hot, so the liquid inside evaporated very fast. The yellow jackets wouldn't leave it alone long enough for us to empty it or add any liquid to it. We ended up with a mess and went back to using 2 liter bottles instead.
Yellow jackets are very common here in Wisconsin too, but I have never had a personal experience with them such as this before... hope to never again.

That would qualify your husband as a *very* brave man - I'd hesitate to
go into a room with multiple irritated yellow jackets :-). I hope
they're gone for good.
I was chased for about 100' by one once before I managed to swat it -
only thing that saved me was that it was determined to sting between the
eyes and nowhere else. I later found out that behavior is common to
that particular variety.
I'm in Spokane WA and we have lots of yellow jackets. In fact, the
company that makes yellow jacket traps is based here. We put out a
couple every spring and they catch quite a few. The idea is to get them
before they start a new generation.
We almost lost a dog once when she snapped at one and got stung on the
tongue.
