Sorry Giancarlo, I have to disagree with you on this one. I have seen canister filters tested with food coloring in the water to watch the circulation pattern... as I have seen the same tests performed on HOB filters and internal filters. Some of this does change depending on the length of a tank, but in general, most situations with a canister filter showed that the intake actually draws up the water in the immediate area, and while the spray bar will help to provide circulation, it doesn't reach as far as we would like to think, and the opposite end of the tank ends up with dead spots that don't get circulated enough to make it to the intake. The biggest area of dead spot for this is the lower, opposite end of the tank (when the intake and spray bar are on the same end and spray bar is at or near the surface). In a situation with spray bar on the opposite end of the tank, in a long tank with no powerheads, the results showed the biggest dead
spot to be the upper area on the end of the intake. Most large tanks (over 30 gallons) with a canister filter can greatly benefit from the use of a small powerhead.

Dawn, assuming the return is pointed sideways, as it should be, you'll actually find that the dead spot is right there under it as the current is being pushed to the opposing end of the tank. There's nothing wrong with placing both intake and return in the same corner...
