Wow... safe to say the sides are not tempered, the bottom may be... Best way would be to give them a call, they have always been quite responsive to such questions. Hopefully someone there will remember what was used in '93 :-)

You really need to go lightly while drilling, I've done it with a hand drill too but you need to really take your time. Practice on a couple sheets of glass first, better to break those than the tank.
Also, keep an eye out for sales in your area, I've gotten 75g reef-ready tanks for a $1/gal in the past. The reef forums such as reefcentral are overflowing with people trying to sell their tanks as of late...
