All sadly true!

Grow a Fish kits
Laws against this sort of thing would be wonderful, but who is out there
initiating these laws? PETA? (wanting to call fish "sea kittens" to stop
people from fishing or keeping aquariums all together)
The people who need to initiate the laws, demand that there be some kind of
regulation over such things, are the customers and people like us who see such a
problem with the abuse that the animals end up suffering.... yet how many really
do anything? How many say anything? Who complains to the companies, the
politicians/lawmakers, etc, and who offers a viable solution?
Most states exclude fish (any species) in their animal cruelty laws and some
specifically outline that fish are exempt from these laws. Therein lies the
problem... fish are still viewed as "disposable pets". The average person
thinks that if you kill a fish, no big deal, you flush it and go get another
one, no harm done. The only time laws are passed about fish is after they have
become an invasive species because someone has acted irresponsibly and either
released a fish into a non native habitat or they are brought in via big
industry "by accident".
Once again... so very sad!
