What I meant was that today it runs rampant around us. Back then morals and values and simple respect were still more common than now. Yes, there have always been "bad seeds", but it seems like more apples are rotten in today's trees... maybe because the population has grown, maybe because morals and values are not taught the way they used to be, not as seemingly important as they used to be.. maybe its a combination of things. Its still a very sad reality that situations like this remind us of.

I don't think "today" has anything to do with it. There have always
been those to whom profit was the only motive. I can trace it back to
at least the middle ages when charlatans sold indulgences and saints
bones - usually from a chicken. Someone in the Paleolithic era was
probably selling "new and improved" stone tools :-).
