For one reason or another I decided change my
substrate as well. After much angst I decided to
try something called Oil-Dri which is available
at Walmart. The cost was about 12 bucks...lol _not kidding.
However it does take about 2 months for substrate
to soak up added fertilizer (osomocote in gel
caps) too become fresh water plant friendly.
This substrate has a high CEC and is made of clay
that has been fired at a high temperature.
Having done it in two stages, meaning I added
more oil-Dri later. I recommend adding all you
need at one time. It is dusty, so pre- rinse it
well. Also beware of how the water is returned to
your tank from your filter. In my case I needed
to place a flat stone down so the movement of
water didn't continually stir up the Oil-Dri.
For the price - it is almost unbeatable. It was
the cheapest stuff I could find with a high
CEC. I am hoping in a month it will look awesome
as I do fertilize and add pressurized CO2.
