Re: [tropical fish club] Automatic Fish Feeders

Kathi,
I will ask my hubby if there is a less expensive auto feeder that he could suggest.  He knows which ones are better than the others more than I do.

In regards to the dissolving feeders... PLEASE don't use those things!  The only thing they serve to do is pollute the water.  I have helped so many people over the years who have tried to use those and come home to a tank full of sick or dead fish.  Those are one product I would love to see taken off the retail market.

My other suggestion would be to see if you can find someone to come in every other day to feed the fish for you.  Its easy if you prepare the food into individual baggies or containers ahead of time.  I have done this in the past and it works very well for everyone.  I get to regulate how much they get each feeding according to how much I put into each baggie, and the date is marked on each so they know which baggie to give on which day.  All they have to do is dump the right baggie into the right tank by following the directions on each baggie.  I have used small plastic food containers at times for this, also have used salt/pepper shakers (new and never used for people food), all of which work very well.  I have also saved old fish food containers for this sort of thing... whatever works for you as long as its clean and not contaminated with human products.

How long are you intending to be gone?

If I can think of anymore suggestions i will let you know, and I will talk to hubby tonight about the auto feeders and see if he can suggest one a little less expensive.  One thing its important to remember is that in the fish world, you tend to get what you pay for.

Thanks for your reply, Dawn. Your hubby's favorite is more than I am willing to spend right now and I just read some reviews about the Fish Mate (the feeder that I had asked about) on Amazon that weren't too good. So, can anyone recommend those dissolving fish feeders? I can have someone come in every 3 or 4 days to drop one in. Are they any good?
