I have to disagree. 2 large HOB filters can be plenty of circulation for a 55 gallon tank, just as much if not more than a canister. When a canister is used its a good idea to add a power head to be sure the water is circulating from one end to the other.
The amount of circulation needed should be determined by the plants and animals in the tank... not all fish and not all plants like a heavy circulation/water flow, and then there are others who need it.

It sounds like what you have now are "hang-on-back" filters. For that
size tank you really need a canister filter with a spray bar to get the
current.
There are lots of different ones out there. I think the Rena Filstar
series are the best value for the money. Other opinions may vary :-).
