Hi Folks,
I set my tank up 2 months ago and all has been going well except for one issue. My plecostumous died suddenly about a month ago. No fungus, no fin-rot, no Ick or anything else.
All the rest of the fish were healthy and happy, and the evening before he died he was quite happily munching food and swimming around the tank. But the next morning he was an inanimate ornament on the bottom of my tank.
I checked my water and everything is in balance.
I gave it a week and then bought a new plecostumous.
This week the same thing happened to my new plecostumous.
I've tested my water again and apart from being a little on the alkaline side everything else is fine.
I change out 10% of my water each weekend, my water is prepared with aquasafe and left to stand for 48 – 72 hours before putting it in the tank. I don't have any heavy algae (just a little on top of my like where the water splashes), and my water temp is kept at 78 degrees F.
I change the carbon/charcoal in my corner filter once a month, and change the filter fluff weekly but keep a small amount of the old flush behind in the filter to keep the necessary bacteria primed in the filter.
Anyone got any ideas on why my pleco's keep dieing? The rest of my fish are doing perfectly and growing nicely.
Thank you.
Sean.
