Sid,
If you have sponges in your overflows, yes. If not change it 1x/week. That way it won't affect your biological filtration. Rick

Sid,
As long as you have 1 pound of live rock per gallon, yes remove them. You are going to fight nitrates forever with bio filters. Rick

This bring another interesting observation pertaining to my system. I have a wet dry trickle filter system. The first stage of the trickle filter is a floss followed by bio cubes ..basically serrated plastic cubes with large surface areas. Is this setup causing the frequent algal blooms in my tank. I have a pesky hair algae issue. Should I entirely remove the bio cubes

Marianne, Please don't try to build your own, there is no good plans for a good skimmer out there. I can tell you don't waste your mony on a CRP, they are the same as having nothing, I don't know about a turbofloater, never had any experance with it. I use ASM exclusivly, they are the best skimmers on the market, uses a pinwheel impeller and they are about $150.00 for the size you need. The sedra pump has a 2 year warranity. I hope this helps !

Marianne,
Are you handy? If you build it yourself, you can do it for a lot cheaper than store bought. Google skimmer plans and you will see a bunch....If not, then check out the turbofloter or CPR. I personally don't like either, but Ebay has many used, better skimmers that can save some bucks....or Craigslist...... Rick

I just purchased a drilled and piped 40-gallon breeder tank with stand, pump, heater and 20-gallon sump. I will be needing lights, wavemakers and a skimmer.
Can you recommend a good, quiet in-sump skimmer for this size tank that would cost less than $200? Something that is easy to install (just plug it in) and comes with its own pump.
Which skimmers should I stay away from (apart from Sea Clone)?
Also I am getting confused about the terms pinwheel impellers, needle wheel impellers, air injection venturi, needle wheel with aspiring venturi, needle wheel pump with venturi air intake, mesh-wheel impeller... Which is best?
Thank you.
Marianne
