Re: [tropical fish club] Re: Discus breeder in SoCal?

Alameda is actually far away from SoCal  - about 6/7 hours drive. I am looking for somehing that I can pick up locally. Couple of years ago I bought a dozen discus but none survived even with a lot of care, this time I want to try a bit larger in size than 2/3 inch frys

There's a Discus Hatchery in Alameda, run by Bing Seto whom I've gotten to know over the years. He's world reknown and has top quality fish on par with Discus Hans. His place is called Discus World, and you can contact him at (510) - 523-8811.

There was also another top-quality discus hatchery in Southern California owned by a good friend of mine, Lo Wing Yat (Sunny) who originally had (and still has) a facility in Hong Kong. About 20 years ago, he came to the United States and set up a partnership with Marc Weiss (of discus fame), and developed a number of the strains that are still popular today -- including the Blue Diamond Discus. The hatchery is called World Wide Fish Farms, although I don't know if he's still running the facility he set up in California as I've lost touch with him. You might want to look for him in your state for great fish though, if his local hatchery is still going.

Re: [tropical fish club] Advice on Plants-duckweed

I wish that it would die off in my tanks. If I am not careful and get one piece in a tank that had not had it, it will take over the top of the tank in just a couple of weeks. I try to scoop it out at least once a week and feed to my Severums and also the Festivums. These two cichlids do eat it but it is not their favorite. I make sure to feed them less during the times that the duckweed is in the tank with them.

[fishingtheusaandcanada] Yellow Bullhead from Crystal River is New State Record

http://www.wctv.tv/wildlife/headlines/Yellow_bullhead_from_Crystal_River_is_new_state_record__113294234.html

A yellow bullhead caught in the Crystal River on Dec. 17 is the new state
record for that species, a type of catfish, according to Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists.

Tom Flynn of Homosassa was fishing with minnows he had caught at a boat ramp
when he hooked into the catfish. The new state record yellow bullhead
weighed 5 pounds, .75 ounces and was 20 inches in length.

"Actually, I was fishing for mangrove snapper," Flynn said. "However, I
started catching catfish and decided to keep them. I caught seven and took
them home."

Flynn tried to convince his wife the fish were good eating.

"She's not really a big fan of catfish," Flynn said. "But she went online to
check them out and discovered that the state record was 2.91 pounds. I knew
I had bigger fish than that."

Sure enough, when Flynn checked his catch, he had two fish that weighed more
than the standing state record.

Eric Thomas, an FWC freshwater fish biologist from the Ocala regional
office, verified the new record yellow bullhead.

Yellow bullhead are similar in appearance to the more common brown bullhead,
with a nearly square tail, but the chin barbels (whiskers) are pale yellow
or pink, unlike the somewhat larger brown bullhead (state record: 5 pounds,
12 ounces) that has darker pigmented chin barbels.

The previous record was a 2.91-pound yellow bullhead. Michael Pace caught it
in the Withlacoochee River in Levy County on March 7, 2007.

For a fish to become an official state record, an FWC biologist must verify
the species and weigh it on a certified scale. However, the FWC also
recognizes anglers who catch a memorable-size fish with a Big Catch
certificate. These are issued for 33 different species of freshwater fishes
and are subject to less stringent guidelines to allow an angler to be
recognized if the fish's weight or length exceed minimum standards (see
MyFWC.com/Fishing or the Freshwater Fishing Regulations Summary).

For a Big Catch certificate, an adult needs to catch a yellow bullhead that
exceeds either 14 inches in total length or 1.5 pounds (youth standards are
10 inches and 1 pound).

The world record for this species is a 6-pound, 6-ounce yellow bullhead that
John Irvin caught in Bates County, Mo., on May 27, 2006.

"I can't believe what good eating these fish are," Flynn said. "I think I'm
going to keep going for them and see if I can catch the new world's record."

Re: [tropical fish club] Advice on Plants-duckweed

Your goldy is not eating ancharis? Hard to beleave but maybe it is growing faster than it can eat it. I know it is not normally the favorite plant to be eaten but I used to feed it to my sisters goldfish. I have all the ancharis you could want. It does not look good this time of year as it is outdoors. All those tanks/pools will be full of guppies come June. I am setting up for a small business venture. I have not decided which guppies to buy. I have thought of endler but also show quality guppies. Both have reasons to choose them over the other. I will be on aquabid this fall for sure with something.

Hi Donna,

I once had duckweed in 3 tanks for a couple of years. Then it gradually
died out. All the other plants stayed healthy. I've read that duckweed
is particularly sensitive to water conditions, but I couldn't see any
change in mine. It's a mystery to me.

To that end, TFH magazine for the month of February has a very
good article about this very point. Sara Jackson's article "Keeping Up
with Nitrate on page 84, gives a very good account of what goes on inside an
Aquarium. Even if you do not subscribe to this magazine, picking up this copy
of it for your own information to have on hand is worth the purchase price
alone.

Re: [tropical fish club] Advice on Plants-duckweed

I wish the flag fish would get after the hair algae but alas no one seems to eat
this at any speed that will make a difference. I also thought the flying fox
might keep some of it in check but no luck.
I've got two shop lights over glub blub's tank so far its worked well for the
anacharis. This summer I might set up a tank on the porch to grow some duck
weed, I really don't have room in the house for another tank.

] Advice on Plants-duckweed

Donna,

If you have room to set up another tank/tub it is easy to grow as you know. I
had a tank/tub(kiddy pool) outside where I would dump my water change water. The
nutrients and high light levels made duck weed a food used 2-3 times a week. So
I set up a 55 gallon tank for this job indoors in my livingroom floor(single guy
who does not care what things look like). A 4 foot shoplight sits on a 55 so no
hood/lid needed. I put 2 shoplights holding 2 bulbs each on top of the tank.
Your goldies nasty water would grow enough to give him his treats. Mbuna
cichlids need veggies in their diet and I was breeding many of these species so
need alot of it.

Flagfish are not big plant eaters but love algea. That is why they are a must
for planted tanks. They will eat the algea off the plant leaves and not harm the
plants. Ofcourse if the get real hungry they will start eating the roots off
your duckweed.

Hi Everyone,

It seems that not a week goes by that our contributing authors
write up something or try to answer questions about new tank
syndrome, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite and what's going on
inside a newly established aquarium and also what can happen
in an older one if it is left go and not properly maintained.

To that end, TFH magazine for the month of February has a very
good article about this very point. Sara Jackson's article "Keeping Up
