Dawn and all,
I totally agree with you. I bred bettas 2 times. All the reading I did said a 5 gallon tank was all that was needed. I used a 10gallon tank half full for the first 3 tries. I used a 20 gallon long tank and had more bettas than I could handle from each breeding when it came time to divide the males. You do need a shallow tank as the article said for proper labyrinth(lung) developement. If I ever breed bettas again I will build a square(foot print) tank about 2 foot and 8 inches high for breeding. I doubt I will ever try breeding them again due to the time feeding all those males in seperate jars. A flow system would be a second must but that does not stop the feeding requirement.
Later, John

That article makes it sound so easy... its not that easy. I also don't agree with some of the advice given in there, especially the part about removing the male once the eggs are in the nest.
That article also says nothing about the aggression levels that can be found in the females. Much like the bettas, the females have the ability to be just as aggressive and can attack the male fish just as easily as the other way around. Personally, I would not be trying to spawn a pair of gouramis, dwarf or otherwise, in a 10 gallon tank... 25 - 30 gallons would be what I'd call a minimum. They need space.
