[fishingtheusaandcanada] North Pole traded for fishing pole

After a long and ar duous winter, salt and freshwater an glers will enjoy their rights on Friday with the opening of the trout and flounder seasons in New York.

But unlike last year, when opening day trout anglers were greeted with relatively tranquil conditions, this winter's heavy snows and resultant high, cold stream conditions will not be friendly.

Saltwater anglers should not expect much from winter flounder fishing because their numbers have dropped considerably over the past decade.

Trout, lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon seasons all begin April 1. Best fishing on opening day usually can be found on Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley, where even in the toughest of springs, fishable water can be found.

New York's Department of Environmental Conservation plans to stock more than 2.3 million catchable-size brook, brown and rainbow trout in more than 300 lakes and ponds and roughly 3,000 miles of streams across the state. Stocking begins this week and ends by early April in the lower Hudson Valley, Long Island, and western New York, and then proceeds to the Catskills and Adirondacks as stream conditions permit.

For a complete list of waters planned to be stocked with trout this spring, go to the DEC's website at dec.ny.gov. You also will find trout fishing recommendations by DEC staff in each region, including suggestions on where to find good opportunities to fish for wild trout, and a list and maps of publicly accessible streams.

New Jersey will have completed its early season stocking by April 7. New Jersey's Division of Fish and Wildlife will stock 180,000 trout in statewide streams, lakes and ponds by opening day on April 9.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife also will hold its annual open house at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

The open house is always held the week before New Jersey's trout opener, and it gives visitors the opportunity to see how hundreds of thousands of brook, brown and rainbow trout are raised for stocking at favorite fishing spots throughout the state. More than 570,000 trout raised at Pequest will be stocked during the spring, with at least 180,000 available for anglers by opening day.
