Re: [tropical fish club] How I got into This

Great story's.
My trip down fish lane started with the best man from our wedding. I had told
him I really liked his fish so he showed up with a 5 gallon tank that he had
just put 5 goldfish and several neon feeder type guppy's in. Of course I knew
nothing about fish and most of them died with in a few days, I started looking
on line to find help for these poor fish, by the end of the first few days I was
down to one very hardy goldfish. This poor fish did well for a few weeks while
I looked for a larger tank, then got stuck under an ornament and died.
Our son and I went to the fish store and there he got his first look at African
Clawed frogs, we were told "sure he can live in a 5 gallon tank, sure he can eat
fish food, sure you should use a heater" All of this information was so wrong I
got looking for a group about frogs and found the two groups I now run.

We had flooding here a few years ago and since then our tap water runs 5 ppm's
nitrite, so for me fish keeping must be done with chemicals I praise
God daily for Amquel Plus and walstad tanks! Live plants and amquel plus have
kept my fish alive and thriving even with our horrible tap water.

Tanks include 75 gallon with Glub Blub and the feeder
neon goldfish descendent's from Steve's original fish he gave me. I know they
belong in their own space but they have spent all their lives together so I
leave them be.
55 gallon with a pair of angels on one side a lone angel, and 3 flying fox on
the other side.
37 gallon 3 female flag fish, and 3 flying fox. All are planted and other than
beard, hair and other various algae's are doing well. Donna

How I got into This

Great idea for a topic, John. When I was a young teenager my Aunt gave me a bag
of her guppies and some plants from her overcrowded, very murky tank that
supplied an endless supply of guppies and plants! I remember that you couldn't
see more than an inch or two into the tank. Of course, they produced wildly for
me too, and although my tank was certainly cleaner than my Aunt's, I'm sure
these fish survived mostly on sheer will. I didn't know anything about testing
the water and I remember the water level getting very low sometimes. I also
remember buying a breeder that you put the pregnant fish into and as the babies
were born they dropped down into an area that the mother couldn't get to. I
also had a net fry- raising contraption that went into the tank to protect the
fry as they grew. Who knows how many poor guppies were in that 10 gallon tank!
