I wonder if they would be safe for the loach to eat. Sounds like they are
"strange". Can you find some photo's of them before the water went bad and see
if they were always that color? Could it be they have a calcium deficiency and
that is caused the color issue??

Question on snails and loaches

Hi Donna-

I'm 100% confident the snail outbreak isn't from overfeeding, the reason I
say that is because this is the same tank we lost about 6 months ago that I
posted (the water company performed work in the area and we lost our tank as
well as 3 neighbors lost their tanks as well)... So, even with no fish in
the tank for over a month - meaning we were putting no food in the tank, we
still had the same number of snails. It's not a "recent" outbreak, it's
something we have always had in the tank. How they survived the bad water I
will never know.

I did check the site and they are trumpet snails... Ours are just VERY
white (must be from the chemical the water company used which might have
bleached ours out a little more) : )

I am more interested in finding out if these are something that is truly
beneficial or if I added a yoyo loach if it would reduce the populations and
if that would cause any harm in the tank or if these are beneficial in any
way. I also want to make sure a yoyo loach will not harm my horse face
loaches though. It's pretty hard to get the horse face loaches to fit in
safely with a cichlid tank and ours work out perfect and I don't want to
mess that up.

We feed Spectrum pellets to the cichlids in the tank.
