A couple of other suggestions. I've had good luck in a planted tank by
buying "tube sand" or "traction sand" at an auto or home store and
washing or sifting out the fine stuff. I wind up with 1/2 to 2/3 of the
bag left. And the price is right. But around here it can only be found
in the fall and winter.
And I recently saw an article about "paver sand" from Home Depot which
is decomposed granite. The article mentioned sifting it just like I do
the tube sand, albeit for a different purpose. It should be available
in spring and summer, filling in for the tube sand.
And then there was the guy who used oil-dri and slow release garden
fertilizer :-).
