Back in the '70s, we visited Redfish Lake in central Idaho. Guess where
it got its name :-). In spawning season the stream feeding the lake was
solid red when we looked down into it from a footbridge.
The run kept diminishing until, in 1992, only one fish made it back. He
was nicknamed Lonesome Larry.
With a lot of help from hatcheries, the run has been gradually
restored. Last year over a thousand fish returned on their own.
Note these are sockeye salmon, not cutthroat trouts. Donna's post just
reminded me.
