You can't put half-grown Cardinals in with Discus, They'll just look on them as though you just gave them a treat. You need to use full grown Cardinals if you don't want them eaten -- and then, as with every other new fish, you should put them in the tank just before lights-out. Then, at least they'll have a slight chance of familiarizing themselves somewhat, with this new (to them) tank, and see where some possible hiding places are if they need some security or places to retreat to if need be.
Otherwise, grown them up to a decent size first, before adding them to the Discus' tanks, as you mentioned.

I was worried about my largest discus yesterday. He acted sick and even threw up once. well, guess what he is fine today. I think he's the one who had cardinals for lunch. Sad I can't keep them. They are so colorful. Rummy nose tetras are doing ok so I don't understand. Deborah
