Auto glass places or your local lumber yard can cut glass to to the right size for you to use as a lid.
I've had lights on top of tanks that hang over the sides and they do ok + they don't need any center support with both sides on the side of the tank. I have mine with about an 1 1/2" open in the front, I use that spot to feed and open the lids.
