Alameda is actually far away from SoCal - about 6/7 hours drive. I am looking for somehing that I can pick up locally. Couple of years ago I bought a dozen discus but none survived even with a lot of care, this time I want to try a bit larger in size than 2/3 inch frys

There's a Discus Hatchery in Alameda, run by Bing Seto whom I've gotten to know over the years. He's world reknown and has top quality fish on par with Discus Hans. His place is called Discus World, and you can contact him at (510) - 523-8811.
There was also another top-quality discus hatchery in Southern California owned by a good friend of mine, Lo Wing Yat (Sunny) who originally had (and still has) a facility in Hong Kong. About 20 years ago, he came to the United States and set up a partnership with Marc Weiss (of discus fame), and developed a number of the strains that are still popular today -- including the Blue Diamond Discus. The hatchery is called World Wide Fish Farms, although I don't know if he's still running the facility he set up in California as I've lost touch with him. You might want to look for him in your state for great fish though, if his local hatchery is still going.
