Larry,
I'm glad to hear the UV sterilizer works as well as it does for you.
They're great for eliminating suspended algae (green water). I might remind you
though, that in doing so, they mask the underlying reason why you had green
water in the first place. Sounds like you may have excessive plant
nutrients in the water and may have been keeping the lights on too long. As you
appreciate of live plants, you could try adding even more of them than you had
before you bought the UV unit, and try reducing the lighting duration. Your
excess plant nutrients might even be coming with your tap water, in which
case PWC's may not reduce them -- only live plants would be able to if this
were the case. There is one major drawback with UV units though and that is,
that they kill off all pathogens too. While this may sound like a good
thing, the fishes' immune system can slowly diminish their defenses -- and when
you add new fish having the normal compliment of latent pathogens (as a
normal part of aquarium biology), your present fish will no longer have
immunity to them and will not be able to ward them off. Don't run your UV filter
continuously, but use it intermittently only as needed. In the meantime,
load up on more plants.
