[tropical fish club] How to tell healthy plants

Note to moderators: I thought I already posted a message like this to the group. I didn't see it, so perhaps I am mistaken.

I recently purchased some Java ferns. They came to me with yellow and black spots on some of the leaves. Some parts of the leaves were all black. I was told that this can be due to improper lighting where I bought them,

My fish are being medicated, so I did not but these plants in the tank.
They are in separate tank getting indirect sunlight. The leaves have all turned green, but I still have black spots.

1) Is there anything I can do boost the health of these plants.

2) What should one look for in buying healthy plants?

Thanks to all,

Yechezkel
