Hi Ray. I think it's best if I recap the whole situation so as to clear any confusion.
Firstly a few months ago the tank had ich which I treated with WS3 (malachite green) for two weeks but it failed to clear the problem, on your advice I then used the heat method and it worked a treat, thank you.
After that the fish all seemed well and acting normally apart from the occasional glancing for a few more days.
About two weeks ago I noticed one of my Gourami was starting to swell; he gradually got bigger over the week, but this week he seems to have stopped swelling and has remained the same size for the last 6/7 days.
He seems to hang near the top of the tank a lot more, not floating, staying just below the surface and not moving about much.
At feeding time he swims around normally to get he's share of the food.
The glancing off the glass is obviously intentional and he will do it several times in succession then he may not do it for a few hours.
He's scales look normal to me and are not sticking out, I gave him some peas cooked and skinned over the last two days which he eats.
If this is dropsy would he have lived this long?
I have uploaded two more photos in the files section in which you can see quite clearly the white stringy poo and the extent of the abdominal swelling, the new file is titled, a sick Gourami and is at the top of the file page.
The only other thing I have noticed is that the health Gourami is bullying the sick one a bit more not all the time but occasionally, I would guess he is taking advantage because he is sick.
They each had their own end of the tank which they would guard from each other but now the well Gourami roams the whole tank and the sick one just stays near the top in the corner.
I do have one of those fine mess isolation box type thing that clips into the tank but thought that might stress the sick fish even more so I never used it.
Think I might take up an easier hobby like gator wrestling but I do enjoy my fish.
