Maybe. But the online stores still don't have the overhead associated
with brick and mortar. And some don't have any inventory - they just
drop ship. IOW, taxes are only a small part of the difference. Of
course the online stores have to deal with shipping retail where the
real stores don't.
I worked retail for a short while after retirement. It takes at least a
25% markup to break even. And more like 50% if you want to pay back the
investors. The on-line stores can go much lower since they're often
garage operations. Of course I'm not talking about the biggies.
The best way to get jobs for those who need them is to bring them back
from China et al. But you'll notice neither political party is
advocating that - they'd lose too many big campaign contributors.
