Re: [tropical fish club] For Connie's Tank

Thanks for the advice, Bill, I appreciate it.
Calling the Ocean Floor and asking about their water is a great idea!
I had a Krib in my other community tank years ago and it was fine.
It was a 40 gallon and I had several different kinds of fish and I can't
remember what other fish there were....LOL!

I do like the idea that the Cichlids seem to have an interesting behavior
that the regular community tank fish do not have. I will have to see what
happens
and having an emergency back up tank is also a great idea!

Maybe Angels with neons would be a better choice as long as the neons were
in
the tank first and the angels were small when first introduced into the tank
....

Maybe Kribs with Angels...That might make an interesting tank.

And the rainbow fish mentioned.....I will have to look into those too.
So many choices...and putting it all together in a safe healthy environment
for the fish is the trick!

Thanks for the advice....
Connie

Hi Connie,

"Maybe Kribs with the neon's"? Here again is a case of try it and see.
In the world of Cichlids anything is possible. But sometimes
experimentation is usually limited to how many tanks the aquarist has on
hand to work with. When putting a Cichlid in with anything other than
another Cichlid, anything can happen.

With this being the case, emergency operations where the removal of the
offending fish is a must, should be upper most in the mind. I have found
that if anything is going to happen, it usually does within the first 24 to
48 hours. If the fish make it past that point I would say that you have a
good chance of keeping the tank together. However, should any sign of
aggression be noticed, like fin nipping or chasing, then quick removal of
the offending fish would be in order.

In your case with already having at least one platy and a few Neon's, I
would go for more of the same. One of my all time favorites is a fish
called the Red Wag Platy. It is basically a bright but deep reddish orange,
with jet-black fins. There is no spotting or discoloration in the body at
all, save for the fins being all black. Since returning to the hobby a few
years ago, I have yet to find even one. They make a very attractive display
along with the Neon's. If you do go to that Pet Center, make sure you check
or call ahead and ask them about their water parameters, especially their pH
value. It might save you a few happy dollars in lost fish.

I had forgotten that part, and went shopping a few weeks ago to a brand new
store, like you driving some distance is also necessary on this end. Just
about every fish I bought died. All the parameters where way out of whack
to what I had here, the difference was too much for the fish to overcome.
Result, extremely highly stressed fish and death.
I have since worked on making adjustments here BEFORE I buy any more fish
and of course, use a quarantine tank when I do. So you see, even an old
salt like me can make mistakes.
