  I've tried a lot of different stuff for plants, mostly to save money.  
  But if you can afford it, I've had the best luck with EcoComplete.  
  Second was planting mix covered with gravel.
  
  But your poor results may be for other reasons. Some have reported 
  problems from using softened water, for example.  And some plants show a 
  definite preference for hard or soft water, low or high PH, and so on.

  get more info on the plant.  They used to give even more data - sorry to
