I decided my 40 gallon with nothing but cories and otos needed something
to occupy the upper waters. I wandered over to Petco and PetsMart to
see what they had. Nothing caught my eye at PetsMart but Petco had some
bloodfin tetras that I'd always liked. But their little card said
bloodfins were shy and needed lots of cover to hide in - not what I
wanted. They also had some Buenos Aires tetras and the card said they
were active. So I got five of those.
Went home and did a little more research - nobody else thought bloodfins
were shy. And every reference said that the BA tetras shouldn't be put
in a planted tank because they'd eat all the plants.
Back to the store. They agreed to exchange. I managed to catch the BAs
without damaging too many plants and traded them for 5 bloodfins plus I
bought 2 more for a total of 7.
To make a long story short, 6 of the bloodfins died. Petco replaced 4
before they ran out of fish and I ran out of patience. So out of 11
fish, I wound up with 5. Not good at all.
I had a similar experience with Petco a few years ago, but time had
faded the memory. Now it's been revived and reinforced. It'll be a
long time, if ever, before I buy live fish there again.
