Did you buy the right size magnet for your tank? As they get larger they are stronger, though you don't want to use on that is made for larger tanks if yours isn't.
I have used a single edge razor blade myself too. You do have to make sure to keep it flush with the glass so you don't scratch the glass and make sure you don't get under the sealant edge.
