Hi Connie,
Tetra's SafeStart is a nitrifying bacteria additive; The Betta does not
need to be removed. Unlike a number of other "bacteria additives," this one
works and is about the most reasonably priced such additive on the market.
It's offered in two sizes, and you'd only need the small size (3.38 ounces)
--
although even this size treats 30 gallons. There's nothing smaller, so put
the remainder in the fridge until you need it again for something (another
tank? LOL).
Prime can give false reading on Free Ammonia, but not on Total Ammonia.
