I buy tanks from Petco all the time when they have their $1 per gallon sale. The tanks are nice and well worth the money. They are the same tanks sold at other times without the sale. However, not all sizes sold by them are on sale when they have their sales. The sizes on sale always seem to be the same sizes. They have around 4 sales per year. The last one was around the end of January 2013. I bought six 20 gallon high tanks on that sale. Petco does it figuring they will boost sales of other pieces of equipment, food, plants, and fish. (the sale is geared for new fish keepers, but is a big boom for regular hobbyists too. One nice thing about the sale is Petco stocks up the stores with many of the tanks to be put on sale prior to the sale. The store clerks have no idea when Petco will have a sale but it is obvious one is coming when you see a lot of them being stacked in their stores. They do not put tanks on sale and just have one or two available so the clerk says, "sorry we are out of the sale tanks". They always have plenty to go around during the sale.
I like to buy locally too but it is hard to pass up tanks at $1 per gallon. They are all first rate tanks and not seconds. I have never had a problem with any of them. Yes, the glass is not 1/4 inch thick, but they do the job and are of standard sizes and get the job done. Unlike many in this hobby today, I don't have salt water, exotic stuff, but common old fashioned type fish such as live bearers, angels, and tetras.
I have no monetary connection with Petco other then being a customer.

Larry,
My morning newspaper today has a Petco ad circular advertising a sale on aquariums this coming week for $1 per gallon, up to 55 gallons. Other than sale times, I've never seen them priced so low, at least not around here (Eastern USA). The normal price for 10 gallon tanks has slowly increased to around $20, little by little, I guess so as not to be noticed as easily as a sudden jump would be.
I don't normally advocate buying from the chain stores as you usually can't get good information from them (aside from many having poor quality fish), but it's hard to beat that price. Could be they're just breaking even on that price or may even be losing money, hoping to make it back double on the accessories.
