Welcome to the list Cliff, from a fellow UK'er (based in SW Scotland)
I'm like you - returned to the hobby after a long break - and have
Killifish, Bristlenose Plecs, Snails and Assassin Snails to keep their
numbers in check. I have a large piece of bogwood centre stage and 8
live plants. My tank is a 30L - I wasn't sure I'd still be keen on the
cleaning and 'faffing' about so decided to start with a small tank that
could be later used as a quarantine tank if I decided to stay in the hobby.
Needless to say, a few months down the line, I'm currently looking at
getting a bigger tank but finances will dictate just when LOL
I also checked out the Fluvals but wasn't sure about the access - same
with the biosphere types - plus I did wonder about the oxygen exchange
ratio when the recommendation seemed to be to fill the tank so the water
level 'didn't show' - which would mean to the glass 'ceiling' and the
only part of the water then in contact with air is the part in the
actual 6" hole!
