I suspect it has a lot to do with the depersonalization of commerce -
largely due to the increase in population density. When you did your
shopping with local merchants, they knew that cheating you would rebound
to their disadvantage unless the immediate increase in profits was worth
losing future business. They also lived in the same neighborhoods as
their customers and saw them in other contexts than customers.
The population of the US has more than doubled in my lifetime. I have
yet to find one positive outcome of that growth.
BTW, the rate of increase in the US is pretty much average. In generalm
we grow faster than the other industrial nations and slower than the 3rd
world nations.
I apologize for the off-topic post - perhaps we should let the subject
drop. Especially as we all seem to be of about the same opinion :-).
