Laws against this sort of thing would be wonderful, but who is out there initiating these laws? PETA? (wanting to call fish "sea kittens" to stop people from fishing or keeping aquariums all together)
The people who need to initiate the laws, demand that there be some kind of regulation over such things, are the customers and people like us who see such a problem with the abuse that the animals end up suffering.... yet how many really do anything? How many say anything? Who complains to the companies, the politicians/lawmakers, etc, and who offers a viable solution?
Most states exclude fish (any species) in their animal cruelty laws and some specifically outline that fish are exempt from these laws. Therein lies the problem... fish are still viewed as "disposable pets". The average person thinks that if you kill a fish, no big deal, you flush it and go get another one, no harm done. The only time laws are passed about fish is after they have become an invasive species because someone has acted irresponsibly and either released a fish into a non native habitat or they are brought in via big industry "by accident".
Once again... so very sad!

At least these people tell you a 10 gallon tank would work really well. The GAF
(grow a frog) people say these frogs that can easily get to 6" and more nose to
butt. Its disgusting! They don't talk about the nitrogen cycle or any kind of
decent care.
We really should have laws against these kinds of "kits".Donna

Grow a Fish kits
I find this very sad. People exploiting animals and ripping off unsuspecting
people, especially children, just to make a fast buck... I was reading the info
listed at the link and where it said that a bowl would work for such a thing...
doesn't matter how peaceful the fish species is, if you put 6 of them into a
bowl you're going to have an issue with aggression, especially if more than 1
male is present... and that is only one of many potential problems waiting for
the people who buy these kits.
What a shame that this COULD be a good thing, a positive educational experience,
if the company would use it to educate people properly and thoroughly about the
hatching, raising, and needed care for killiefish. They could also use it as a
conservation effort to bring awareness of what is happening to our ecosystem and
the natural habitats of these fish and what we as people could be doing to help
save it, preserve it, and appreciate it.
