Erika,
Platys should be pretty easy to replace as they are not specifically paired for breeding. Males will breed with any available female as long as it is platy... and some are not even that particular and will breed with swordtails too.
The rams may be a bit more difficult as they do pair up and not all males/females are compatible in such ways, although if there is only 1 male and multiple females to choose from the chances to increase.
In regards to the fish watching tv, you should know that unless your tank is within about 6 - 10 inches from the tv screen, the fish cannot see it. Anything beyond that distance they see mostly just shadows if they see anything at all. Where the tv is concerned it is a matter of their vision abilities through the tank glass, especially when there is light over the aquarium. Most tv screens still also will show a glare rather than an actual picture when viewed through water and glass. It is highly unlilkely that your fish are watching tv, but if close enough to the tank, they may react to sudden light changes from the tv screen, especially bright flashing light.

When you buy fish that are mated pair or a school of fish and they die for what ever reason it can be a chore to find the right fish to replace them.
This has happened to me before. In the summer I had bought two orangey-red Platys(a male and a female) and two Blue Balloon Rams (also, known as German rams I think) and one of each died. The male ram died and the female Platy died.
So I went back to the fish store and they didn't have any Blue Balloon Rams. At the time I didn't know about German rams.
So, I went back to the fish store and I saw the big Ocean Dusk Platys and I thought the male Platy would be happy that with that and I bought two females. The male Platy was thrilled.
I also bought two Golden Algae Eaters. They are camouflaged against my light coloured gravel and at first I was worried if I couldn't find them. A friend of our neighbor's helped me too find them because I was anxious to find them. lol.
The ram and Platys are friendly to each other.I think that all of my fish like their surroundings and they like to watch the aquarium channel on tv.
lol.
