Our tv is about that close to the aquarium. If anyone goes close to the end they
get fed on my Platys get excited too. Even the Ram gets into the action. It
takes her a little longer to come to the surface. She waits until the food comes
closer to her level. Eventually, she comes up to the surface because she also
feels safer while the big fish are up at the top.

It may be just shadows, but my rainbows can certainly tell when I'm
sitting in my favorite chair, about 3-4 feet from the aquarium. They
watch me patiently till I get up and then they get all excited. They
associate my action with being fed, even though many times I get up and
don't feed them.
