Re: [tropical fish club] Injured fish

Ok we over the net can not "see" the flap of skin scales. It is a judgement call on wether or not to trim the flap. If the flap is long enough that it waves when the fish swims it would probly be best to remove some of it. If it is more like a roll of skin and stays still as he swim just leave it alone. It is not an easy task trimming a piece of skin on a fish. They are slippery and hate being out of water. If you think it needs trimmed you need the swallowist bowl that will cover the fish with water. Get someone to hold fish while someone else clips. I have used fingernail clippers or medical scissors(small).

As to healing without scabs. Think about yourself getting a cut on your hand and then going swimming. The wound clots and gets a slimmy coating. The fish does the same thing. This slimmy coating is good and bad. Without it it will not heal but it is a perfect feeding ground for bacteria. The more parial water changes you can do the better. I suggest 50% everyday. Make sure not to feed him much if anything for the next couple of days. Fish commonly go weeks without food in the wild. We as human tend to want to feed our pets 3 meals a day like we eat and it is not proper. The idea is to make sure there is no left over food and even less waste from the fish itself.  Hope this helps. My oscars taught me well how to care for such injuries.

Hi,

Thanks Dawn, John and Donna. Do you suggest daily water changes with prime, stress coat, and salt and melalfix? If so have much please. It is 4uk gal but i think that meand roughly just under 5 us gals. I may be wrong.

It doesnt have a filter in at the min. Its a bubbler, should i get a sponge to go with it, can convert into filtration. I will do water tests as soon a i get back tonight and let you all know.

I know, he must be hurt. Thats why i put no decorations or stones, just a hide. I feel trully bad for hurting him, and i dont want to see him in pain. Omg i am not sure how to cut the flap off :( Im sure i can do it, but id be scared. When i had my rat I had to cut his teeth and first time i cried, so hope i can do it ok.

Thank you
Amy x
