I too have a similar story to yours :} I have a 55gal with 2 blood red parrots ,2 yellow body/red eye cichlid(forgot their names but they were pretty) a silver dollar, "fair" won goldfish by my 11yr old, a platy, 1 peacock fish, and last but not least the betta(which was housed by himself for my 6yr old and mommy got tired of cleaning the 5gal tank)!
Such a strage mixture of fish alot say, but for some reason I keep em happy. Every once in a while the yellow guys like to get mean, but everyone seems to hold their own in there. No nipped fins or wounded lips.
The Betta usually hangs around 1 side of the tank. It's like he has his own section of the tank that is his. When he takes is daily swim around the "neighbor hood" the other fish don't pay attention to him.
keep in mind that I do have plenty of caves and plants for all of the fish to find their home. I've found it neat to hang plastic plants upside down in the corners of tank or I have on old wind chime of a clay hollow mushroom that I took all metal parts off and hung it by air hose in the middle of tank. Using the slits in the lid w knots :>
Sorry to be long winded, but my fish are very interesting to me and to everyone that comes over. They are friendly little guys that love to say HI to EVERYONE!...ooops thought I might add 1 more thing...I did have a black mollie in the tank, but he kept as I would say"being a pesty little brother" to the other fish so I took him out. Im not sure if it was due to him being the only mollie in there and he was trying to find a buddy, but I did take him out and he is now housing with neons.
Good luck w ur ltiile buddies!
