Re: [tropical fish club] Blind goldfish

Hi All,

I enjoy following this list very much and I have learned a lot even if I do not post much.

My sister and I were at Petsmart earlier today, checking out the fish, when she noticed in one of the goldfish tanks a goldfish that had no eyes.  He had the sockets but both eyes were completely gone.  We asked the salesperson and she stated he came that way to the store and if we wanted to adopt him they would let us have him for free.  I was going to take him anyway as it was so sad to see him in with all these other goldfish pushing him around.

He is now in my 65 gallon tank.  He is about 2" long and is a fantail.  In this tank I have two gourami about 3" long, two parrot fish, about 2 inches long, about 10 cardinal tetras, 10 corys and a one male and two female fighting fish plus about 20 guppies.

I have a Fuval pump, air pump with stone, lots and lots of real plants and several logs for hiding places for the fish.

I would appreciate any tips on how to care for this blind fish.

I know, very bad, I did not quarantine him before putting him in the tank, all the fish in the tank he was in at the store looked healthy and he looks good, no spots, no missing scales, fins up and swimming well.   I will keep a careful eye on him to make sure that he stays looking healthy.

I put flake food (Omega tropical flakes) and he was able to get in the middle of the flakes coming down and eat and he shoveled through the gravel looking for more flakes.  He was able to eat several large pieces.  He has been traveling around the tank looking through the gravel and swimming in and out of the plants for the past several hours now.  Can they detect food by smell?

I am not sure if I should do anything special for him.  I work from home and the fish are fed four or five times a day, small portions each time.  I use frozen, flakes and the algee circles.

Everyone seems very healthy and since I have had the tank set up (a couple of months now) I have only lost one cory.  All parameters are in the safe zones, I test weekly.

Thanks for any help.
