Hi Amy,
That's great that Marshmallow is learning to eat again. These 3 or 4 large
Aquarian brand flakes aren't really a lot, but if you could feed him at least 3
(or preferably, 4) times a day like this, it should be enough along with
supplements of bloodworms every few days, to sustain him and promote some growth
-- even if it may not be the fastest growth a Goldfish can exhibit.
If he can learn to eat more flakes at each feeding, you can reduce the
bloodworms, but while we've already established that bloodworms are not the
ideal staple food for Goldfish, right now even if he takes 10 flakes a day it
may not be enough to keep him healthy. I would suggest continuing the
bloodworms as a more substantial variety since right now he's able to eat it
better than the flake. This would be one instance where we'd be going against
what's considered as the best diet for Goldfish, but his overall
calorie/nutrition intake is what needs to be considered here foremost. That he
can eat flake food is a big plus, as it means the bloodworms do not need to be
his main diet. Perhaps he may also be able to take tiny pellets, or pieces of
broken algae wafers in time. As pond season is now approaching, you may be able
to get some duckweed, which he may learn to eat.
