Re: [tropical fish club] Lighting question!

I always ask myself if tropical fish should be kept with a night and day lighting cycle similar to the one they have in their natural habitat,  when I see aquariums with light bulbs on top and always on, I ask myself if it does or  doesn't stress the fish out don't they need darkness at some point in order to rest and regenerate?

At night I cover my bettas tanks with a card board box although I always make sure the top is half open for aeration it blocks most of the electric light coming from the kitchen and the living room  but it doesn't create complete darkness. After I wake up in the morning I remove the box and sometimes I see the betta at the bottom still sleeping something that it doesn't happen if I leave the tank uncovered.Am I doing something stupid even though with good intention?
