Hello
I have been reading this thread with interest. I have lots of different catfish, loaches, plecos etc. And i have to admit my favourite loaches are the group of chain loaches i keep. They are active and move through all areas of the tank, bottom, middle and top. they are totally none aggressive so can be kept with smaller fish or other non aggressive fish. i have mine with some small cichlids, a flag ciclid (who isn't what i think small but mellow)) a male betta and some tetras. I keep mine in a 90 tank but they do fanastic in smaller tanks due to their size, they only grow to about 2 1/2 inches. They do need to be kept in a large group if you want to see the best in their behaviour. so problity no less then 10 to a group, drawback is that they are not a cheap fish so it adds up when you need to buy so many. I feel pretty well most other loaches, except any of the dwarf types would be too small for a 30 gal tank.
To catfish, any of the smaller types of cory's (have you thought of the panda cory) they are smaller than most and so cute. But again should be keep in a group. Another choice in cory's if you plan to keep other small type fish is the dwarf cory's which only grow to about 1 1/2 inches, but should be kept in a large group (at least 10 or more) and like the chain loaches are active all over the tank. i think you could have the most amazing tank with a group of dwarf cory's and dwarf loaches, some dwarf cichlids and a group of tetras. All areas of the tank would be covered, of course the tank would also have to be a planted tank. Mmm this is giving me ideas, but i do not need another tank, no room.
oh someone mentioned the hillstream loaches, yes they stay small, but they need cooler waters and don't do the best in the typical tropical fish setup.
goodluck
