I have not seen these types of fish in our local pet stores.

I've got hard water with a ph that varies from 7 to 8 depending on the
time of year. I find that most commercially raised fish are fine, but
the two groups that fit the best are rainbowfish and cichlids. The
rainbowfish are less agressive. Take a look at:

The advantage of the Praecox (dwarf neon rainbowfish) is that they breed
easily and don't eat the young - at least not much.
