Hi Dianne, I am a fellow reefer, have been keeping reef tanks for about 20 yrs now, currently have 2 running, a 29 gallon biocube and a 75 gallon that will be getting an upgrade to a 120 next summer (if not sooner, lol).
The first thing to clarify is what do you consider "low light reef"? Can you name some of the animals you're interested in keeping in this tank? Or do you have a specific light that you're thinking of using? Beyond that I would focus on what equipment you intend to use (skimmer, filtration, water circulation, etc.) because that will also dictate what animals you can keep.
The other suggestion I will offer at this time is when you're dealing with a small tank, be sure you have an outlet for coral frags before you buy the corals. Small tanks, when done right, will grow very rapidly. To not frag the corals when they get over grown means the risk of losing everything in the tank due to both water quality issues and chemical warfare that corals wage against each other when they get too close. A lot of people treat corals like plants without realizing they are animals and each has its own special needs, from light to current to food, to space. So take your time, approach this slowly, and do an immense amount of research before you jump in. Saltwater, especially reef keeping, has much less room for errors than freshwater.
I hope this helps to get you started. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have. I'll surely do all I can to help you. :-)

Morning everyone,
I'm thinking about venturing into the world of saltwater. So wondered if there was any reefers in this group. What i want to set up is a low light reef tank as i have been told its the least costly for startup. the tank i'm going to convert is a 25 gal high, i know i will need to find a better light as the one i use currently is totally low end of the lights. there is a local fish store locally which is the place to go for salt so have talked briefly to the owner and he gave me some reading matieral, as well as told me to read everything he has posted on his web site (seems he has something like 30 pages of reading up there) i did have a fish only salt water tank 35 years ago but things have changed so much since then. looking forward to anyone who has any experience as will be having questions
thanks so much
dianne
