Thanks, Donna, for the advice to call Dr. Tim again. He was very nice and
informative.
Dr. Tim says the tank has cycled and with me using Prime that is causing the
false ammonia readings with both the Seachem and API test kits.
He said that the key is that since I have no Nitrites and good Nitrates that
the tank has cycled, and with the fish doing fine that is another sign the
tank has cycled.
He said if I stopped using Prime as my de-chlorinator that after a few weeks
of PWC the Ammonia would show as zero when all the Prime is gone from the
water. He said this is a very common thing that goes on with people who use
Prime and the API test kits and the seachem test kit. We know my seachem
tests are messed up because the Free Ammonia never shows as it should at 0.
And I have been using 2 tsp Prime every other day thinking I had bad ammonia
in the tank....so my tank has a lot of Prime in it.
Don't know if any of you have had this false positive ammonia test with the
Prime and the API test kit. But that is what Dr. Tim said and I tend to
agree with him since the Nitrites have been at 0 for 5 days now.
So now I might be able to add another fish or two! Yeah!!!
Connie
