sounds like Hornwort. I have these tank in my tanks and for the most part, quite easy to grow. I found these plants do well under bright lights, i haven't had to do anything else. But without the right lighting, the plant sheds and makes a mess out your tank and clogs the filter. is this what your plant looks like

is this isn't your plant, this site may be helpful in finding out what you have.
if its hornwort you have, you don't put it in the gravel and if you do, the part under the gravel will die. the plants seems to do the best when left to float.
